The YMCA offers both group and private lessons to players of all ability levels. These lessons are offered both day and evening throughout the year. Youth Tennis Programs 2018

Session IV & V

Tiny Tots (Ages 3-5) Call 304-340-3533 for information. 

Emphasis will be on age appropriate gross motor skill development and enhancing student athleticism through simple tennis activities.  Movement, coordination, balance, agility, tracking, throwing and catching activities will be introduced.  Children will take part in games that are both fun and tennis related.  Tiny Tots will be played on 36 foot courts using red low compression balls.  A 19 inch racquet is appropriate for this class.


Students will continue to develop gross motor skills and general athletic skills.  Basic techniques will be introduced for ground strokes, volleys, and serves.  Students will learn basic footwork while tracking a ball.  Students will learn the first stages of cooperative tennis and will work on developing self and partner rallying skills. Students will also become familiar with basic tennis rules and learn how to score.  Beginners will be played on a 36 foot court using red low compression balls.  A 19, 21 or 23 inch racquet is appropriate for this class.

Students will learn more advanced stroke production with emphasis placed on the serve and return of serve. Students will continue to develop rallying skills while using individual, paired and team activities which will aid in developing both cooperative and competitive skills.  Singles point play will be introduced with an emphasis on team work and sportsmanship.  Intermediates will be played on 60 foot courts using orange transition balls.  A 23 or 25 inch racquet is appropriate for this clinic.

Tournament Prep

A clinic designed for those youth who have the interest and desire to advance into tournament level play with the hopes of achieving goals in Middle School, High School or District Tournaments.  Participants will learn more advanced stroke production with the emphasis on consistency and placement.  There will also be an introduction to the use of spins and racquet head acceleration. Skills will be practiced using cooperative live ball drills and point play.  Students will learn strategy and tactics for both singles and doubles match play.

Tournament Group

A clinic for juniors who are pursuing District and Sectional rankings. Participants will be directed through skills and strategy sessions, on the court and off court conditioning programs, mental toughness training and time management.   This clinic is for dedicated and self determined tennis players who are pursuing competitive competencies and a tournament schedule. Participants must be approved by Rico Williams.

Middle School Tennis/Pre-Competition

This clinic is for motivated young players that can serve and sustain a short rally from the baseline.  The clinic will feature complete technical development with emphasis on increased consistency and better placement. Students will learn the basics of point construction and will be equipped with the skills necessary to play a match.  Participation in this clinic will enable students to transition into the Tournament Preparation group.
The pre-competition clinic will be played on 78 foot courts using the green transition balls and, when appropriate, yellow tennis balls.  A 25-27 inch racquet should be used.

Charleston Family YMCA Pickleball

Pickleball…the new sport sweeping across the nation. But you say, “What is Pickleball?” Pickleball is a sport for everyone that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. It is played with a paddle and plastic ball (wiffle) on a small scaled court. 

The YMCA will be offering Pickleball free to YMCA members and $2.00 for non-members on the following days and times (paddles and balls are provided)
