Child Care
Child Care Programs
Early Learning – Offered at Cross Lanes YMCA Child Development Center
Nursery (6 weeks – 12 months)
We believe that learning takes place at the very beginning of life and begins with creating a calm, loving, positive, nurturing and safe environment for the child. Our nursery sets the foundation of a lifetime of learning. Our babies are cared for by friendly, enthusiastic, and responsive caregivers. Their daily needs are addressed with smiles and frequent eye contact that will help them learn to trust others while away from their families. We utilize primary caregiving to promote loving interaction between baby and caregiver during diaper changes, feedings, rest time, and playtime. Babies are talked to about what they are seeing and experiencing therefore fostering their language development. Songs are frequently sung and soothing music is played during naps. Our caregivers also begin to introduce basic American Sign Language to the babies which will prepare them for the next class. Activities are regularly offered to help reach early developmental milestones and are tailored to each baby’s individual needs.

Waddlers (1-year-old)
In our Waddler classroom, young toddlers are introduced to a class routine while still providing a calm, loving, positive, nurturing and safe environment for the child. The routine is flexible and is adjusted to meet the individual needs of the toddlers. They begin to eat, sleep, and play at the same time. This schedule allows predictability and a feeling of security among the toddlers. Our Waddler teachers focus on fine motor skills, gross motor skills, social skills, language development, and also begin to introduce colors, numbers, shapes, and letters. Basic American Sign Language is used on a regular basis to open up the lines of communication between the toddlers and caregivers and the toddlers and peers. American Sign Language is a wonderful tool for toddlers; used to express their needs and feelings while still developing a vocabulary of their own.

Toddlers (2 years old)
The second year of life is an exciting time of rapid growth and development. Toddlers begin to recognize appropriate and inappropriate behaviors, explore independence and will experience huge thinking, learning, social, and emotional changes that will help them to explore their new world. Some of life’s biggest challenges face children at this time: how to be safe, how to get what they want without taking from others, and how to express themselves. Toddlers are encouraged to try to use their words to express their needs and feelings. Children at this age are capable of demonstrating many skills and we support the abilities of each individual child. For example, two-year-olds are beginning to follow two or three step directions, sort objects by shape and color, imitate the actions of adults and playmates, and express a wide range of emotions. Through play, exploration, and observation toddlers learn how the world works, by observing and interacting with objects around them. Our toddler teachers will be consistently trying to reinforce and develop these skills in a developmentally appropriate and nurturing learning environment.

Preschool (3 years old – 4 years old)
A child’s feeling of independence and social interaction with others, as well as, developing the necessary skills for Pre-K is what the Preschool classroom is all about. Our Preschool classroom revolves around the children learning to help themselves and getting along with others. We know that children learn by doing and the teachers are their facilitators and guides. Our Preschool teachers work hard to prepare a learning environment that provides stimulating, challenging materials and activities for the children. During the course of the day, children are encouraged to make choices for themselves, cooperate with others as well as listen and follow directions. Classroom teachers lead the children in small and large group activities, such as movement, read-a-loud stories, circle time and art activities. The children are encouraged to make friends, share and communicate with their classmates. The children are also encouraged to use the restroom on their own, although assistance is given if necessary.
