This July, an amazing program will take place involving one hundred fortunate young teenagers in the Kanawha Valley.   A consortium of regional organizations is making possible a free, four-week, health program emphasizing academics, teamwork, recreation, and leadership.

Key Information:

  • Participants will be picked up by Kanawha County School (KCS) buses at designated assembly points between 8:45—9:45am.
  • Morning hours will be spent in academically-oriented activities coordinated by 4-H, WVU, and Bridge Valley Community College.
  • A meal prepared by KCS will be provided at lunchtime.
  • Afternoon hours will be spent in recreational team-building activities (sports, games, swimming) coordinated by the YMCA.
  • A snack meal prepared by KCS will be provided at 3:00pm
  • KCS buses will transport participants back to the designated assembly points and drop them off between 3:15—4:15pm.

This camp is designed for those who want to play sports and games all day! Join us at the Charleston Family YMCA for a fun filled session of sports and team building fun. This camp offers basketball, soccer, football, baseball, softball, volleyball, and cheerleading/tumbling. Camps are instructed by successful high school or college athletes and coaches.

2019 YMCA Summer Camp Registration Packet (DOWNLOAD)

Our Summer Day Camp’s emphasis on Achievement, Belonging & Relationships help campers grow as individuals while being a part of something bigger. Besides games, crafts, and theme activities, each week campers will be involved in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) Activities, Summer Reading Program, Swim Lessons and Fitness challenges too.

Campers will be involved in activities each day and will have a special activity each week. These activities may include a field trip, special guest at camp or a special event that week. Dedicated and caring staff help campers feel as though they belong, connect them with others in camp so they build friendships and guide them through activities to foster a sense of achievement. We have so much planned for this summer and can’t wait for you to be a part of it!

Week 1: June 3-7 Planet Earth

Prepare for a journey through the earth, as we explore the amazing wildlife of our planet this week! Bring your best animal and bird calls as we appreciate the diversity of life on our planet with safari and jungle themed games, and animal arts and crafts! Keep your eyes peeled at camp this week! It’s a jungle out there!

Week 2: June 10-14 Creative Campers

Get ready to get messy this week! Explore your imagination and express yourself as you create with hands-on projects.  Mold with clay, tie dye T-shirts or socks, make friendship bracelets, paint pet rocks, and more.  Games include paint tag, living sculptures, and camp tie dye.

Week 3: June 17-21 Full STEAM Ahead

Interested in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics? This week’s theme involves hands on and interactive activities. Learn how to build robots, perform a melon drop, boat competitions and more!

Week 4: June 24-28 Wet N Wild

Splash and explore this spectacular week while learning about the wonders of water and the creatures of the sea.  Create splash artwork, water games, and bottle waves. Water relays, slip and slide, water balloon toss and more! Be ready to be splashed all week long!

Week 5: July 1-5 (No camp on July 4th!) Hip Hip Hooray, Independence Day!

Show your American pride and have fun participating in activities that celebrate our country and its traditions.  Activities and games include Capture the Flag, watermelon eating contest, pie throwing contest, and patriotic themed crafts.

Week 6: July 8-12 Backyard Bash

Come join your friends as we enjoy the summer sun! We will have picnics at the park; take part in classic outdoor games; such as limbo, corn hole, Tug-of-War, sack races, relay races that you won’t want to miss and much more. To finish out the week, we will have a BBQ cookout on Friday!

Week 7: July 15-19 Take Your Place in Outer Space

5-4-3-2-1- Blast off! Let your astronaut explore space with us this week. They will explore space play dough, “moon sand”, and make their own alien goo and space slime! Each day will be filled with fun games, crafts, and activities that help us explore space.

Week 8: July 22-26 Get Your Game On

Ready? Set…Go! Campers will use their skills to play hard and to go for the gold with some fun competition. A good mix between minute to win it games, sports and old school board games!

Week 9: July 29-Aug 2 Around The World

Hello! Bonjour! Hola! Kon’nichiwa! This week we invite you to explore the cultures and sights of our miraculous planet! Get ready for activities and crafts celebrating our planet’s wide cultures! This is one trip you’re not going to want to miss!

Week 10: Aug 5-9 Camp Rewind

Summer Unplugged, Camp Coonskin

Amazing things happen when kids unplug and reconnect with others! Summer Unplugged, Camp Coonskin provides a fun, safe experience for kids to learn new skills, build self-confidence, and make lasting friendships. Campers days will be filled with swimming, tennis, golf, nature hikes, crafts, science, disc golf..  Available for grades K* through 5 (*Must be five years of age 1st day of camp). Camp will run 9 am to 4 pm with pre camp starting at 7 am and post camp ending at 6 pm.  The Camp will be held at Coonskin Park.

Prices: $110 Members, $145 Non-members
NOTE: The YMCA does NOT provide lunch for this camp. Campers must pack own lunch.

Campers will be divided according to age and ability on our five indoor courts.    Participants will learn basic stroke techniques and have the opportunity to practice in a fun environment. Games, relays and team competition will be used to promote camaraderie, teamwork and sportsmanship.

Child care will be provided for Tennis Camp participants in the Summer Day Camp, K-5th, between the hours of 7am-6pm.  A designated counselor will sign your child in at the Tennis Department and will be responsible for transferring all personal belongings.  Your child will participate in the morning day camp activities, including any off-site field trips that have a return time prior to 1pm and afternoon activities following tennis camp.  All rules, procedures, and policies apply to Tennis Camp participants.
